War in Darfur

 

February 2003-  Sudanese rebels launched attacks in Darfur, demanding the end

to injustice in the region.  The government developed troops to retaliate.



October 2003-  The United Nations try to gain worldwide support in order to give

 aid and end the conflict.



2004-  Continuing peace talks led to a ceasefire agreement between Khartoum

 and the rebel groups.  The African Union decided to aid the peace process, and

 sent in protection groups.




2005-  Janjaweed murder 75 people in eastern Chad.  Many of those killed were

 civilians.



2006-  A peacekeeping force set up by the United Nation's Security Council is

refused entry into Sudan by the government.



2007-  ICC builds a case against Sudan, naming a Sudanese minister and

Janjaweed leader suspects; a charge Sudan ignores saying the court doesn't have

jurisdiction.



2008-  ICC prosecutor asks judges to issue an arrest warrant against the

 president for masterminding the mass murders in Darfur, committing crimes

 against humanity, and war crimes.
